Designed as a high-speed, low-level penetrator for nuclear strike missions, the F-105 Thunderchief became the chief strike aircraft of the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. Nicknamed the ‘Thud’ by its crews, its use evolved to include the uniquely dangerous Suppression of Enemy Air Defences mission, for which two of its pilots received the Medal of Honor.
